With over 200 attendees, the Women’s Fund of Portage County held its annual Spring Luncheon Friday May 8, 2015, at the SentryWorld Grand Hall in Stevens Point. Jeanne Herder, chair of the Allocations Committee, announced the year’s grant awards and Ann Shannon introduced the 2015 SPARK award recipient, Kathy Davies.
The mission of the Women’s Fund is to empower women philanthropists by creating opportunities to fund programs that will develop the full potential of women and children. Since 1997, the Women’s Fund has provided over $349,000 to 62 agencies. Notably, the funds have been mainly built from donations of everyday women in the community. The support of the business community with special raffle donations and sponsorship of events has been critical.
This year a record $52,800 was allocated to 16 agencies and projects that improve the situation of women and children in Portage County. At the luncheon, Marilyn Worth, of Meals On Wheels, a new grant recipient, noted that in the first four months of 2015 there were 92 elderly women served. Of those 92 women, two were over 100 years old and 35 were over 90 years old. The program helps them realize their goal of staying in their own home. Judy Meyer represented another new grant recipient, Head Start Suzuki program. The funding from Women’s Fund provides an opportunity for education and engagement of children in live music while also involving parents in observing, learning and developing parenting skills.
